Grants-2008
Biomedical Research Grants 2008-09

Opportunities for Individuals
NBScience grants support promising biomedical research scientists working outside the United States, medical and dental students seeking research training, and leading research scientists who are developing new approaches to undergraduate science education.
Please note that NBScience's grants for individuals are awarded through competitions that have specific objectives and eligibility criteria and that NBScience does not encourage and rarely funds unsolicited grant proposals.

• The supported research must be conducted
in one of the following13 eligible countries.
Researchers may not be citizens or
permanent residents of the United States.
• Grants are awarded for fundamental
biomedical research on basic biological
processes and disease mechanisms. Eligible
epidemiology research includes that
directed toward an understanding of disease
distribution in populations or of associations
that may suggest causality or preventive
strategies. Clinical trials and research on
health education, health care delivery, or
health services are not eligible fifi elds.
• Applicants must hold a full-time appointment
or have a pending appointment at a
nonprofi t scientifi c research organization
in any one of the 13 eligible countries and
have made signifi cant contributions in
fundamental research on basic biological
processes or disease mechanisms (including
disease-oriented and patient-oriented
research).
• Applicants must be active researchers
without major administrative duties who
devote most of their professional time to
research, mentoring, and teaching. The
awards are intended for scientists whose
research careers are still developing rather
than for those in the later phases of a
distinguished career.
• Applicants must provide evidence of
their research achievements by providing
references for a minimum of three
scientifi c articles published since 1999 in
peer-reviewed English-language biomedical
journals.

• Each grant is for a term of fi ve years,
expected to be from early 2006 to the end
of 2010, and provides between $50,000
and $100,000 annually. Approximately 40
grants will be awarded.
• The grants are designed to support the
research of talented scientists in their home
countries. Allowable expense categories
include salaries and stipends for award
recipients, graduate students, postdoctoral
fellows, and technicians, equipment
and supplies, travel, and publication
costs. Grant funds may not be used for
laboratory renovations. Up to 10 percent
of the grant may be used to pay for indirect
costs (including administrative costs) of the
scientist’s institution.
• In recognition of the importance of
the intellectual environment in which
international research scholars conduct
their research and the limited research
resources available in some circumstances,
a portion of each grant must be
allocated to shared resources, with the
goal of enriching the general scientifi c
environment in the scholar’s department.

• Scholars are required to submit annual
progress reports on their research, and the
grantee institution is required to submit
annual fi nancial reports. All reports must
be submitted via the Web.
• International research scholars selected in
this competition must agree to spend at
least eight months of each year in their
own countries.

• Evaluation of the applications will be
based on the applicant’s record of research
accomplishments, his or her promise
for future contributions to scientifi c
knowledge and research capacity (the
potential impact of the funding on the
scientist, the laboratory, the institution,
and the broader research community),
and the scientifi c merit of the proposed
project.
• All applications must be submitted
through Web-based competition
system. Only one application from each
individual will be accepted. Applications
are accepted from individuals only; two or
more applicants may not submit a joint
application.
• All applicants will be notifi ed of the
outcome of the competition in late 2008.
Neither the status of applications during
the review process nor comments of
reviewers will be provided.
